Expansion Joints (Maintenance & Remediation).

BRIDGE EXPANSION JOINT REPAIR & MAINTENANCE

Repairing & Maintaining a bridge expansion joint is a critical task that restores structural integrity and prevents water infiltration, corrosion, and further damage. Here’s a service offering by REMCON Group that outlines of how bridge expansion joint repair or maintenance is typically carried out by us.

INSPECTION & ASSESSMENT

Visual inspection: Look for cracks, water leakage, noise during traffic, and joint misalignment.

Measure movement: Ensure the expansion joint is functioning within designed movement limits.

Identify damage: Check joint seals, anchoring system, elastomer degradation, rust, or spalling of adjacent concrete.

SITE PREPARATION

Traffic control: Set up safety barriers and traffic redirection as needed.

Surface cleaning: Remove dirt, debris, asphalt, and loose concrete from the joint and adjacent areas.

Joint excavation (if needed): Use saw cutting or jackhammers to expose the full joint area.

Removal of Damaged Components

Cut and remove old joint materials (metal runners, elastomeric seals, etc.).

Remove any deteriorated concrete around the joint.

Clean and inspect steel components for corrosion—replace if required.

CONCRETE REPAIR (IF NEEDED)

Reconstruct damaged nosing or edge beams using high-strength repair mortar.

Install dowels or anchoring bars if structural reinforcement is needed.

INSTALLATION OF NEW JOINT COMPONENTS

Place the new expansion joint system: This may be a strip seal, finger joint, modular joint, or XJS-type joint.

Secure mechanically or with epoxy adhesive, depending on the system type.

Check alignment, gap size, and height.

SEALING AND WATERPROOFING

Apply joint sealants or waterproof membranes around the edges.

Install any waterstops or drainage systems integrated with the joint.

FINISHING & REOPENING

Replace asphalt or concrete overlay around the joint.

Smooth transitions between old and new surfaces.

Allow curing time for adhesives or concrete as per manufacturer specs.

Reopen to traffic once fully cured and secure.
